Be patient. Check your corners, any windows or balconies, and always watch your back. Try to move with a plan, sprinting from cover to cover as you advance. Never run headlong through the middle of a courtyard; you should move along the perimeter, watching for any signs of movement at overwatch positions and doorways. If you get into trouble, don't be afraid to wait. Chances are that if you have a good position and keep a level head then your pursuer will come to you, and you will be ready. Remember, only fools rush in.

When setting up an ambush, the key is to be prepared. Stay aware of all entrances and exits, keep your back to the wall, and use cover to your advantage. Set any claymores or C4 out of sight, preferably at a corner or choke point where enemies will pass through. Most importantly, keep moving. Even a change from one side of the room to the other could buy you valuable time when the chump that you just killed shows up for revenge, and they always do.

Use your killstreaks wisely. A nuke would be nice, but you are far more likely to get an airstrike or a sentry gun. When you do, placement is key. A sentry gun should be placed in a spot with a long view, as well as protection from the rear. The corner of a courtyard would be optimum. An airstrike should be dropped at a killzone, where multiple enemies are gathered. Listen for shootouts and use your radar to find them. Always be careful when picking up a care package; there's probably someone watching. These are free kills, so take your time and make the most of them.

Know your location. There is no greater advantage than knowing the terrain when the enemy does not. Try every spot, search for nooks and crannies, and go to the places where your opponents are holed up. The knowledge gained will bring you more ambush kills and easier escapes from danger. Everyone prefers a different setup so this process will be trial and error, but it will surely make you a more effective fighter in the long run.

Follow these basic rules and I guarantee more victories, a higher kill/death ratio, and a very angry enemy squad. Have fun!
